The year 1977
saw the introduction of the futuristic Porsche 928. The Porsche 928 was
so far ahead of it's time that it was honored with the "car of the year"
title. Porsche served the sports car market with the famous Porsche 911
since many years. With the introduction of the 928 Porsche entered the
Gran Turismo market. A sports car able of cruising at very high speed
with excellent driving comfort, silence and perfect road holding.
The design of the 928 was astonishing in the seventies of the twentieth
century and the entire construction was new to Porsche. Porsche is
renown for its flat six air-cooled engine which is mounted in the rear
of the car, not in the 928, the car featured a liquid cooled V8 engine
mounted in the front of the car. The Porsche 928 was powered by the rear
wheels. To optimize the weight distribution of the car Porsche fitted
the gearbox to the differential (Transaxle) an expensive but effective
solution.
The Porsche 928 was meant to serve a different type of customers: people
who found the 911 far to racy and Porsche customers who wanted to own a
Porsche Gran Turismo.
The excellent aluminium 4474 cc. V8 engine was engineered by Porsche and
the earliest models already delivered 240 DIN bhp. power output.
In 1979 the Porsche 928 S was introduced featuring a larger cylinder
capacity of 4664 cc. and an enlarged power output of 310 bhp.
In 1986 the Porsche 928 S4 was introduced. Again the cylinder capacity
was enlarged (4957 cc.) resulting in a capacity of 320 DIN bhp. The S4
also featured new styling for the rear lamp units, they were larger and
they were no longer placed recessed into the rear.
The Porsche 928 is an excellent and very reliable sports car. The car
never managed to equal the popularity of the Porsche 911 because of it's
"Porsche unlike" concept. Porsche enthusiasts who are looking for a
great Gran Turismo could not make a better choice.
