For the Turin
Motor Show of 1970 Bertone built a very extreme concept car; the
Stratos. The concept car was based upon a Lancia Fulfia HF components.
Cesare Florio, manager of the Lancia rally department, saw Bertones
creation and became inspired to built a very special rally car. He asked
Marcello Gandini to design the car and the Lancia rally department took
care of the technical lay-out. In the year 1973 the Lancia Stratos was
presented to the public. The design of the car was stunning and nowadays
the Stratos is still seen as a benchmark by design students. The extreme
wedge shaped body, the technical lay- out and the intriguing details are
of a timeless and purposeful beauty. Because of the short wheel base and
the centrally placed engine the Stratos handled very agile and balanced.
But it could be tricky at high rally speeds because of it's short
wheelbase and rear wheel drive. The V6 engine was derived from the
Ferrari Dino. This rather compact engine suited the Stratos very well. In
the year 1974 was homologated to enter the World Rally Championships. Lancia won
the Championships twice with the Stratos. In the year 1979 a private
driver won the famous Monte Carlo rally with a Lancia Stratos. The Lancia
Stratos was built from 1973 until 1975. The total amount of cars
produced is not certain, several sources contradict each other.
Presumably 500 Lancia Stratos cars have been built. Because of the
unique design and the rally successes the Stratos has become a mythical
status. V6 engine,
