Lotus Seven series 2, 1964 information

Colin Chapman is one of the big names in the history of car engineering. His firm Lotus Engineering Company creates racing and sportscars which form a class of their own. Lotus cars are fitted with relatively small engines but because of the low weight and the superb road holding capabilities they are extremely competitive. In Formula 1 and 2 racing Lotus was very successful with the light and small Lotus 18 with mid engine. That car was responsible for the first F1 victory for Lotus in 1960. The light and agile Lotus 18 was able to defeat more powerful (but larger and heavier) Formula 1 cars of Ferrari and Maserati. For the road cars the  philosophy of cutting weight was also successful. The Lotus Seven which was presented to the market in the year 1957 can be seen as a street legal front engine two seater 'racing car'. The car was constructed around a tubular space frame clad with aluminium body panels. Fitted with reliable and simple Ford mechanics (Coventry Climax engines for the Super Seven), independent front suspension, rudimentary lighting and two seats the total weight was far below 500 kg. The power to weight ratio was perfect, driving comfort on the open road was non existent, therefore the driving experience was very intense! The cars were available as kit or factory assembled. The Lotus (Super) Seven has proven to be an evergreen in concept. Caterham bought the Lotus Seven rights in the early 1970'ies. The firm still manufactures (2012) the 'Seven' in kit form and factory build. The Dutch car manufacturer Donkervoort builds extensively evolved high tech Lotus Seven inspired cars within the same concept.
