Sunbeam 20hp 3-Litre tourer, 1927
Photo overview - Technical data - Information
Sunbeam was
one of the earliest British motor car manufacturers, the first
experimental Sunbeam 'voiturettes' were built around 1899. Sunbeam
produced conventional cars in the early years before WW1. The cars
proved to be very reliable and solid. Sunbeam cars were successful in
racing, the cars lacked some power against the competition but their
reliability built them an excellent reputation on the motor circuit! The
golden years of Sunbeam were the 1920'ies as the firm built impressive
models with 6 and even 8 cylinder in-line engines. Grand Prix successes
were celebrated and land speed records at Brooklands were broken by
Sunbeam cars. In 1920 Sunbeam combined their strength with Talbot and
Darracq. As an engineering company Sunbeam operated and innovated
a lot like Alvis. Overhead valves, special suspension findings and
vacuum servo brake systems found their way to Sunbeam models very early.
In ruggedness and reliability Sunbeam rivaled the Bentley. At the end of
1935 the Talbot-Sunbeam-Darracq combination went in receivership. The
makes were bought by the Rootes group and the Sunbeam cars were named Sunbeam-Talbot
from then. Six cylinder
