The Lancia
Aurelia saw the light of day in the year 1950.
The first models introduced were the sedan,
station car and limousine. According to Lancia
traditions the Aurelia again was a hallmark in
technical innovation. The car featured a light
alloy (aluminium) 60° V6 engine and a gearbox
with clutch fitted to the rear axle (Transaxle
construction) The Transaxle construction made an
ideal weight distribution, on the front and rear
axles, possible. The car also featured a unitary
bodywork structure.
In the year 1951 the famous Lancia Aurelia
sports car followed: The Lancia Aurelia B20 GT
series 1 (first car in the so called GT class).
This magnificent 2+2 coupe model was designed by
PininFarina and the design was a revolution in
the early fifties of the twentieth century.
The advanced mechanics, the light bodywork and
the aerodynamic design made the Aurelia B20 GT a
true drivers car.
The car successfully participated in many rally
and race events, like the Mille Migla (finished
second place) and at Le Mans (finished first in
its class).
The first Aurelia B20 GT series were powered by
a two litre V6 engine, from 1953 (series 3) a
more powerful 2.5 litre V6 was fitted. From 1954
(series 4) a deDion rear axle was fitted which
improved the roadholding even more. The Lancia
Aurelia B20 GT was built until 1958, the B20 GT
series 6 was the last model built.
Nowadays
the Lancia Aurelia B20 GT is a very much sought
after classic car. The cars are very hard to
find and expensive. Many proud owners use the
cars like they were in "the old days" in
competitive events like the historic Mille
Miglia.
