The Mercedes-Benz 220 (W187) model series was the high line of the Mercedes-Benz model programme next to top of the line 300 model. The models featured beautiful six cylinder engines ranging from 2195 cc. (220) up to 2996 cc (300). The Mercedes-Benz 220 and 300 were introduced on the Frankfurter car show in the year 1951. The 220 was built until 1955. In these four years of production 16,154 saloon models, 1,278 cabriolet A, 997 cabriolet B (from 1954) and only 85 coupe models were built. This magnificent Mercedes-Benz 220 A was sold new to the renown actor, director and screen writer Alberto Sordi in Rome, Italy. A certificate of the 'Automobile Club d’Italia' of Rome, dated 6 December 1967, is present and stating the history of this fine automobile. In the year 1966 the automobile was purchased by the American movie star James Mitchum the oldest son of Robert Mitchum. In the 1992 the automobile was purchased by the American Mr. Robert D. Hopkins. Hopkins had the Mercedes-Benz extensively restored in the year 2008. A photo reportage, invoices and correspondence on the restoration are present as is a lot of other documentation. In the year 2011 the automobile was sold to France. This Mercedes-Benz 220 S is in excellent to excellent+ condition and the car drives superbly. The car is still registered in France. This
