The Marcos company was founded by Jem March and Frank Costin in 1959 and their first car was marketed in the year 1960. Their cars could be purchased complete or in kit form. The first Marcos GT car featured 'gull wing' doors, a glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) body and a chassis constructed of marine plywood composite. The very light cars were powered by Ford Anglia engines. In 1964 a new, bigger and very distinctive looking GT car saw the light of day with bodywork designed by Dennis Adams. This sleek and very low GT model would last for many years! The new car was based upon a steel chassis and all bodywork was again made of GRP. First came the four cylinder models built between 1964 and 1969. These cars featured a De-Dion rear axle and 1500/1600/1800 cc. Ford or Volvo four cylinder in-line engines. The GT cars featured disc brakes at front and drums at the rear.
The year 1969 saw the introduction of the GT 3-Litre. 80 3-Litre cars were powered by the Ford Capri 3 Litre V6 (Essex) engine, 11 cars were fitted with the Triumph TR 6 engine and 250 cars were fitted with the Volvo 2978 cc. straight six engine.

In 1965 Marcos introduced a small car based upon MINI mechanics, sub frames and parts: the Mini Marcos. This car was built aside the big GT.

Due to bankruptcy in 1971 the firm closed for a few years until Jem March started up production again in 1981. The 3-Litre with Dennis Adams designed body was re-introduced in kit form now adapted to be mated with the Ford 2792 cc. V6 OHV (Capri/Granada) engine. The 3-Litre was built until 1990. In the year 1984 Marcos presented a roadster version of the Dennis Adams designed GT; the Marcos Mantula! The front was slightly modified and given a modest spoiler since the previous design tended to 'lift' with the additional power and higher top speed given by the now incorporated Rover 3500 V8 engine. In 1989 the Mantula was upgraded with the then new 3.9 Litre Rover V8. Marcos went out of business again in the year 2000. In the year 2002 a Canadian revived the Marcos make for racing purposes.
